For years HandBrake wrote exactly three containers — MKV, MP4/M4V and WebM — so it would ingest your AVI and hand back something you didn't ask for. Version 1.11, released in 2026, changed half of that: it added MOV output alongside new Production ProRes and DNxHR encoders. So AVI to MOV is now possible in HandBrake, but only down that production-codec path, and MOV to AVI remains impossible because it still writes no AVI at all. The myth that breaks this conversion

It's worth being precise about the HandBrake situation, because it explains why this list looks different from most video converter roundups.

HandBrake is built on FFmpeg's libavformat and libavcodec libraries, and its documentation says it "generally can open whatever FFmpeg will" — listing MOV and AVI explicitly among common source types for phone footage, screen recordings and analogue captures. The encoding side has always been deliberately narrower: for years it wrote MKV, MP4 (sometimes seen as M4V) and WebM, and nothing else. That changed in March 2026, when HandBrake 1.11 introduced Production ProRes and DNxHR encoders that export to a newly supported MOV container.

Two caveats keep this from being the simple answer. First, MOV output arrived tied to those production codecs, so it's aimed at editing-grade intermediates rather than a small file you can email — expect large output. Second, AVI output still doesn't exist and shows no sign of arriving, so the reverse direction is genuinely off the table. Worth noting too that HandBrake's own container documentation page still lists only the original three formats, which is why a lot of advice you'll read remains out of date in both directions.

The same asymmetry shows up across the tooling landscape once you start looking. Plenty of converters advertise "500+ formats" and mean 500 inputs. Browsers won't help either — MDN's container documentation notes that MOV playback is effectively Safari-only, and that Apple itself "generally now uses MP4 for video." Microsoft, for its part, files the AVI specification under DirectShow, which its own documentation flags as "a legacy feature" superseded by Media Foundation.

So both halves of this pair are, from the industry's point of view, formats on the way out. AVI and MOV, honestly

These two containers were designed a continent and a philosophy apart, and it shows.

AVI is a RIFF file. Microsoft's specification describes it as "a RIFF file specification used with applications that capture, edit, and play back audio-video sequences" — a header list, a data list, and an optional index chunk, all built from four-character codes. The original 1.0 index (idx1) is where AVI's reputation for size limits comes from; the OpenDML extensions later added a second index type (indx) and a super-index to work around it. AVI has no native concept of chapters, soft subtitles or variable frame rate. It carries whatever codec was handed to it — DivX, Xvid, MJPEG, DV, uncompressed — which is exactly why one AVI plays fine and the next one doesn't.

MOV is Apple's QuickTime File Format, built from nested atoms rather than chunks. Its most important property is genealogical: as MDN puts it, "QTFF served as the basis for the MPEG-4 file format," though "there are differences and the two are not quite interchangeable." That shared ancestry is why MOV and MP4 so often hold byte-identical H.264 streams, and why converting between them is usually trivial. MOV also carries things AVI never will — timecode tracks, alpha channels, ProRes.

The practical upshot is a rule of thumb worth internalising: find out what's inside before you convert. If your AVI contains H.264 or MJPEG, a good tool can rewrap it into MOV — copy the streams into a new container without touching a single pixel, in seconds. If it contains Xvid or DV, QuickTime Player won't reliably decode it, so you need a genuine re-encode to H.264 or ProRes. Only three tools on this list expose a rewrap option at all, which is a large part of why they rank where they do.

That asymmetry gets sharper when you run the conversion backwards.

Going the other way: MOV to AVI

We're placing this before the rankings rather than after, because it genuinely changes which tools qualify.

AVI to MOV is usually a promotion. You're moving a stream into a more capable container, and if the codec is compatible you can often do it losslessly. MOV to AVI is the opposite trip, and it is almost always lossy — not because AVI is a bad container, but because of what MOV tends to be carrying. Movavi's own format tables illustrate the squeeze nicely: it reads ProRes, AIC, CineForm and H.264 out of MOV, but writes only H.264, MPEG-4 and MJPEG into AVI. ProRes has nowhere to go. HEVC in AVI is technically expressible and practically a compatibility disaster. Alpha channels are lost.

So if you're converting MOV to AVI, you are almost certainly re-encoding, and the honest question becomes: what are you re-encoding for? In our experience there are three legitimate answers. Older Windows editing software or broadcast ingest systems that only accept AVI. Scientific, machine-vision or analysis pipelines built around uncompressed or MJPEG AVI. And legacy hardware — DVD authoring boxes, older set-top players, industrial equipment — that was specified in 2006 and is still running.

If any of those are your situation, aim for H.264 or MJPEG in AVI and accept the generation loss, or go uncompressed if the receiving system can handle the file sizes. Adobe Media Encoder, VideoProc, Movavi, Any Video Converter Free and FFmpeg all write AVI. Adobe's is Windows-only for AVI export, which its documentation states plainly. Adobe's documentation is unusually explicit about this pair, which makes it easy to recommend without hedging. Best for: Getting AVI footage into an editing codec for free, when you also want to trim or fix it on the way through.

Shotcut is a free, open-source, cross-platform video editor that encodes through FFmpeg, and its FAQ names ProRes 422 and DNxHR HQ among its export presets — which is a notable thing to get for nothing. The documented presets cover the MOV and editing-codec direction well; AVI output isn't among the presets Shotcut publishes, so we haven't credited it for the reverse trip. Best for: A one-off conversion where you want real codec settings and don't want to install anything.

FreeConvert deserves a note that its ranking doesn't convey: its settings panel is better equipped than several desktop tools above it. Where browser tools stop making sense

We build a browser converter, so it would be convenient to argue that browser conversion always wins. It doesn't, and video is the clearest case where it doesn't.

In-browser conversion works by compiling FFmpeg to WebAssembly and running it in your tab. The privacy benefit is absolute — the file never moves, and there's no server-side policy to read or trust. The performance cost is equally real. WebAssembly runs slower than a native binary. The tab has no access to your GPU's video encoder, so every conversion is a software encode. And the whole job has to fit within the tab's memory budget, which is why every browser tool in this category has file size caps and why ours are 100 MB on the free tier and 2 GB with credits.

AVI makes this worse than most pairs. It's a bulky container that often holds lightly-compressed or intraframe-coded video, so a ten-minute clip that would be 200 MB as MP4 can be well over a gigabyte as AVI.
